Empty Kodiak is an American indie rock band from Cleveland formed in 2021. The group is a collective of musicians centered around the work of singer-songwriter, Chaz Stead.
The expansive sound on their surf-pop single “Teeth” features a saxophone solo by Dave Gorski with what is known as the prismizer effect, programmed by Stead. Popularized by artists like Francis and the Lights, Kanye West, and Bon Iver, Empty Kodiak achieved the effect by harmonizing Gorski’s saxophone with itself; comparable to the visual effect of a prism.
The brooding B-side single “The Ghost” is an autobiographical storytelling of Stead’s own experience dealing with unresolved conflict and loss. The emotionally-charged tune is made even more striking by featuring Stead’s wife, Kennedy, on vocals and 3-year-old daughter, Adeline, speaking at the songs open and close.
Regarding this, Stead commented: “This song was extremely personal for me to write and record. But as The Ghost was taking shape, I realized it needed to be ours as a family, not just mine. Opening it up felt like an exhale.”
